The Utrecht school of painting reached its height in the 1620's when Brugghen, Honthorst, and other Dutch followers of Caravaggio were active there. It has been reported that Rubens on his trip to Holland in 1627 had said, 'that traveling throughout the Netherlands and looking for a painter, he had found but one, namely ter Brugghen.'
