Vermeer placed his three musicians on the far side of an expansive room, each intently involved in playing his or her part. While a young woman sits at the harpsichord and her male accompanist plays a lute, a standing woman sings as she beats time with her right hand, a gesture Dutch artists frequently used to indicate moderation.
