As this seated young woman tunes her lute while gazing toward a window, she seems lost in thought, only vaguely conscious of the measured sounds from her strings. Indeed, for a painting with a musical theme, the tenor seems extremely quiet, as though we, too, can scarcely hear the muted notes she plays.
