This is perhaps the single most annoying, arrogant, and gorgeous portrait ever painted. Here Durer is boldly advertising who he is and what the viewer should think of his work. On the left is his monogram and date. On the right is the Latin inscription. When translated it states; "Albrecht Durer from Nuremberg, painted this myself with incredible colors at the age of twenty-eight years." What is striking is that there are almost no colors at all- the palette is limited to browns, black, and flesh tones, with two accents of white. The portrait shows the artist as Christ and God. The religiosity of the portrait is emphasized by the uncompromising frontality, similar to the Byzantine mosaics showing the domineering face of the Savior.
