Euphronios
fl. ca. 570-465 BC, Athens
Sarpedon Vase
515 BC
ceramic 18in high
Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY

This vase is actually the work of two artist. Euxitheos, the great potter shaped this bell krater into a daring cantilevered structure with its huge over hanging lip and large almost oversized bell that is set onto a foot that seems just wide enough to support it. Brilliant as the design was, it is the painter Euphronios who stole the show. The scene shows the twin brothers Hypnos and Thanatos(Sleep and Death) transporting the lifeless body of Sarpedon, son of Zeus from the field of battle, to be prepared for a hero's funeral. Euphronios used a bag with a metal cap on the end with a minute hole in it, sort of a fancy pastry bag. Though he could barely see what he was doing, he drew hundreds of lines on the vase. The picture did not show up until after the vase was fired and if you could study the vase you would not find one error on it. He is considered one of the supreme vase painters of all times and it has to be understood that a vase painter of Greek archaic times was in the top rank of artists of all media.
