Rembrandt confined himself to painting history pieces at the beginning of his career. Occasionally he couldn't resist the urge to insert his face in the paintings. In this painting he shows himself as an eye-witness to a solemn event. Scholars still haven't reached a concensus on exactly what is happening in the painting. However, all agree that it is Rembrandt's face behind the sceptre.
