Rembrandt made this, the smallest and probably the earliest of his etched self portraits, on part of a plate that had been used for another etching, The Flight into Egypt. He concentrated on the depection of the head, adding on the contours of the shoulders. The lines of shadow under his face help suggest the torso. Made when he was about twenty two this portrait more than any other has a boyish, almost childlike appearance.
