Bullfight
1864
oil on canvas
49.7x108.9cm
Frick Collection

For many years The Dead Toreador was considered to be the only surviving fragment from the Incident. The first mention of this painting as a fragment occurs in Duret's monograph on Manet in 1902. This colorful painting is a scene of action and is filled with specific information and detail. The incompleteness of The Bullfight- as seen in the odd slice of the bull and the legs of the bullfighters abruptly cut off at the knees. Although croppings are common in Manet's work, these are truly bizarre. The image is composed of three horizontal bands. At the bottom, there is a sliver of the bull, a narrow strip of light sand in the arena, and finally the brown wooden fence which encloses the arena.
