MEURICE, Paul

1820-1902

Paul Meurice and his wife Eleonore (nee Granger, 1819-74) were close friends of Baudelaire and fervent admirers of Victor Hugo and Wagner. Their salon was a cultural meeting place in the 1860's and Mme Meurice defended Manet when Olympia caused a scandal at the Salon of 1865. An excellent pianist, she and Suzanne Manet played Wagner for Baudelaire during his final illness.
