MARTINET, Louis
1814-1895
A painter and Fine Arts administrator, Martinet held exhibitions in large premises on the Boulevard des Italiens from 1860 and founded the Societe Nationale des Beaux-arts. From 1861 to 1863 he issued a lively art amgazine, the Courrier artistique which fought vigorously for the Salon des Refuses.
Changing displays with works for sale, and individual exhibitions (including a Delacroix memorial show) created considerable public interest and an important group of Manet's paintings achieved a success de scandale in 1863. Disillusioned, Manet withdrew his support in 1865.
