HOSCHEDE, Ernest
1837-1891

A wealthy businessman and speculator, Hoschede was a major collector of Impressionist paintings. He was especially fond of Monet. But like a character from a Zola novel he became bankrupt in 1878, his entire collection of over 30 impressionists works was auctioned off. After moving in with Monet he separated from his wife and family. Hoschet remained active, launching L'Art de la mode to rival the Charpentiers' Vie moderne in 1880. After his death in 1891 his ex-wife, Alice, married Monet.
