FAURE,Jean-Baptiste
1830-1914
In 1876 Faure's career as a baritone ended with his final role in an operatic version of Shakespeare's Hamlet, the subject of Manet's portrait shown at the Salon Of 1877. A clever and thrifty patron, Faure acquired many of Manet's paintings, including Le Bon Bock which the artist hoped might be purchased by the State in 1879, and later marketed his Manet's through Durand-Ruel. He eventually collected 68 of Manet's works. Faure belatedly received the Legion of Honour in 1881, at the same time as Manet, through the good offices of their mutual friend Antonin Proust.
