FANTIN-LATOUR, Henri
1836-1904

One of Manet's earliest friends and admirers, Fantin included him in three of his large group portraits (including A Studio in the Ratignolles Of 1870) and painted the portrait (Salon of 1867) that was reproduced in La Vie modern for Manet's 1880 exhibition. In the 1870's and 1880's he pursued a kind of photographic realism that owed something to the traditions of Courbet. His flower and still life paintings however, did possess a greater lightness and freshness of handling, which made them popular among the English.
