DURANTY, Edmond
1833-1880
A prolific novelist and critic, friend of Champfleury and Degas, Duranty supported Courbet and the realist cause and later the Impressionists. In spite of the challenge to a duel in 1870 over an alleged affront, Duranty fully acknowledged Manet's lead in the development of'the new painting'. He was especially attracted to the ideas of Degas, sometimes to the discomfituer of Monet and Renoir.
