Related by marriage to Henrictte Metman, the wife of Edmond Fournier (Manet's maternal uncle), Adam was a member of the legal profession. Photographs of him and a letter written in July 1861 have documented an uncatalogued painting as a portrait of Adam sketched in a garden at Pressagny-l'Orgucilleux, on the Seine between Paris and Rouen.
