Young Bull in a Field 1881 oil on canvas 79x99cm Private Collection |
Manet was never a specialist painter of animals. But he was friendly with two artists who were. The first was Comte Albert de Balleroy with whom he shared a studio in the 1850s. Little survives as a testament to their friendship and according to the inventory after his death, Manet owned one painting by Balleroy. The other was Jules de La Rochenoire who Manet campaigned with to reform the jury system of the Salon. Manet painted a portrait of him. As A painter, La Rochenoire is virtually forgotten but at the Salon of 1875 he did show one painting. |
