Ambroise Vollard, maverick Parisian art dealer, he organized Cezanne's first one-man show in November 1895, is the first recorded owner of this painting. It may have been included in an exhibition of Manet's work arranged by Vollard in November 1894. Since then it has been exhibited only once, in a show held at Bernheim-Jeune, Paris 1928. What is interesting in this esquisse is the way Manet has rapidly worked all over the canvas, not only laying in the figures but intrducing the first indications of an outdoor setting. |
