Racing at Longchamp

In this painting, Manet attempts something completely new by showing the horses head-on, coming straight towards the spectator. It was the first time they had been shown in this way. The tradition was to show them in profile at full gallop.
This is part of a larger work that Manet cut up the the following year- the other part is still missing. The painting is executed in large brushstrokes, and for a long time was treated as a sketch or study, and was not popular with the public.
