According to Bazire, during the last days of the Salon of 1865 Olympia had to be repositioned to a height where it would escape notice and attack. Paul de Saint Victor seemed to sum up the reactions of the visitors: 'The mob crowds around Manet's rotting Olympia as if they were at the morgue. Art which has sunk so low is not worthy even of censure.' |
