 Spanish painting was the rage in Paris at this time. To Manet and his comtemporaries it was Velazquez. Manet paid homage to Velazquez in two ways. First he copied this painting hanging in the Louvre. Second he went further and evolved his own composition so that it would show the interoir of Velazquez's studio. The painting Les Petits Cavaliers has since been found not to have been painted by Velazquez. |
