Manet wanted to visit Delacroix after seeing his painting in the Luxembourg. He was told by Murger at lunch, "Have care, Delacroix is a cold fish." But Delacroix received him most graciously in his studio and told Manet; you should look at Rubens, emulate Rubens, copy Rubens, Rubens was his God... After leaving the studio Manet said to Proust, 'Delacroix isn't cold at all, but his doctrine is frozen. Anyway, we'll copy the Barque. It is a fine piece.'
