| Modigliani painted some two dozen nudes from
1916 to 1919. Roughly half appear to be painted in
1917. The figure's gaze is cast directly at us, as
Modigliani frames the model as an object of possession
and desire. Unlike the artist's vast repertory of
portraits of friends and lovers, the nudes generally
depict unknown models.
