Portrait of an Old Jew Rembrandt
"Portrait of an Old Jew"
Oil on canvas
The Hermitage

The United Provinces were known for their great religious tolerance and gave refuge to Jews fleeing the Inquisition. The majority lived in Amsterdam, where Rembrandt's house was located.

This painting doesn't seem to be a commissioned portrait because of the unconventional clothing. The sitter himself conveys great spiritual strength.
