| Controversy surrounds both the attribution and the date of this painting, whose 'sfumato' technique is believed to have been primarily evolved by Leonardo. The numerous glazes create an equal number of degrees of shading, with the result that the figure of John seems to emerge, radiant with light, from out of the darkness. |
